The actor died of a heart arrest in November 2023. Buddy Duress, who costarred with Robert Pattinson in the Safdie Brothers’ film Good Time, has died. He was 38. Duress, real name Michael C. Stathis, died of “a cardiac arrest from a drug cocktail” in November 2023, his brother Christopher Stathis reported to People on Tuesday.
Some Notable Achievements of Buddy Duress
Duress was well renowned for his role as Mike, a heroin dealer, in the Safdie Brothers’ 2014 film Heaven Knows What And. In Good Time, a 2017 film based on Duress’ story, he plays Ray, a freshly released convict to Pattinson’s protagonist Constantine “Connie” Nikas.
In a 2017 SSense interview, Duress stated that he first met Josh Safdie in 2013, after his release from jail on narcotics charges. He earned the role in Heaven Knows What shortly after, but was returned to jail before the film’s release for failing to complete a drug in-patient program.

“You know, I look back on it. If I had gone to that program, I wouldn’t have been in Heaven Knows What, and I probably wouldn’t be an actor today,” Duress stated at the time. “That is the honest truth. “I would not.”
According to the Los Angeles Times, the Safdies adapted Duress’ account for their Good Time script using the actor’s diaries after his second release from jail. Duress went on to appear in several other feature-length and short films, including 86’d, The Mountain, The Great Darkened Days, and Flinch.

Family Left Behind by Buddy Duress
May 1985 saw the birth of Duress in Queens, New York. In the 2014 film “Heaven Knows What,” directed by Josh and Benny Safdie and starring Caleb Landry Jones and Arielle Holmes, he made his acting debut. In the movie “Good Time,” Duress plays Ray, a drug dealer who joins forces with Connie Nikas (Pattinson) to get a Sprite bottle that contains acid. Jo-Anne, his mother, and Christopher, his younger brother, survive Duress.
