The show is set in 1600s Japan, at the start of a civil war that would change the whole century. Lord Yoshii Toranaga is in danger of dying because his enemies on the Council of Regents have joined forces to stop him. But when a ship gets stuck in a nearby fishing town, the pilot, John Blackthorne, knows things that could help Toranaga and hurt the power of Blackthorne’s enemies, the Jesuit priests and Portuguese merchants.

They have to depend on Toda Mariko, the last of a line of shamed Christian noblewomen who works as a translator, to help them talk. While working for Toranaga, Mariko has to figure out how to balance her new friendship with Blackthorne with her duty to her late father and her faith.
