Oppenheimer Plot
J. Robert Oppenheimer while studying at Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge was feeling homesick and anxious. He also left Patrick Blackett a poisoned apple and stops rising scientist Niels Bohr from accidentally eating the apple. Oppenheimer was able to finish his studies and moved back to the United States.
After his graduation, he was employed by US Army General Leshe Groves to less the Manhattan Project to develop an atomic bomb. He was also made to declare that he had no sympathy for communists. At that time Oppenheimer thought that the Nazis had a nuclear weapon program underway before the US which was headed by Heisenberg.
Oppenheimer then assembled his team which includes Edward Teller, Isidor Issac Rabi, and David Hill in Los Alamos New Mexico. The team was tasked to secretly create an atomic bomb with the intention that it would save the world despite the bomb creating a global crisis.
During the development of the bomb, Oppenheimer had a conversation with Albeit Einstein they discussed the possibility of the bomb ending the world. However, following the German’s surrender in World War II most of the scientists working on the project began to doubt the relevance of the project.
The bomb was eventually completed and passed Trinity Test which was also successful. The war in Europe was ending before President Harry Truman approved the use of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki which forced the Japanese to quickly surrender.
The success of the bomb saw Oppenheimer tagged as the father of the atomic bomb. He was haunted by the vast destruction caused by the bomb. He also told Truman to use restraint in developing more powerful weapons and Truman perceives his distress and insisted that as president he had the right to do whatever he feels like doing.
Oppenheimer decided to advocate against the further use of nuclear development especially the exploration of hydrogen bomb. The new development positioned him against Teller and his stance who was the focus of a cold war with the Soviet Union.
A hearing was held in other to remove Oppenheimer from the political structure and it worked as Oppenheimer was betrayed with a testimony given against him by Teller and others associated with him. Despite testimonies from several of his allies his security clearance was revoked which subsequently damaged his public image.
