Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx has received a $1 billion bequest from the widow of a prominent Warren Buffett investor to fund tuition for all future students.
Ruth Gottesman has presented the most substantial bequest to a medical school in the United States, the college announced in a statement. She presided over Einstein’s board of trustees and taught pediatrics at the institution for an extended period.
In 2022, her spouse, David, passed away at the age of 96. According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, his early investments in Berkshire Hathaway Inc. had amassed a net worth of nearly $3 billion as of mid-2022. He had been a friend of Buffett for the past six decades.
The college stated in a statement, “This transformational gift is intended to attract a talented and diverse pool of individuals who might not otherwise have the means to pursue a medical education.”
