The fact that one of the most innovative and well-liked auteurs in cinema, Anderson, won his first Academy Award for a short film will likely be met with confusion, if not outrage, among his countless admirers. The statement from Anderson went on, “And also: I would certainly not be receiving this award tonight if I had not met Owen Wilson in a corridor at the University of Texas between classes when I was 18 years old. Unfortunately, Steven and I are in Germany and we start shooting our new movie early tomorrow morning, so I did not receive the award [in person] or get a chance to say any of that.”

The Phoenician Scheme, starring Benicio Del Toro, Michael Cera, and Bill Murray, is the movie Anderson allegedly mentioned. Roman Coppola is listed as a co-writer as well. Germany gave Anderson 1.5 million euros in funds to shoot the movie last September.
