On Wednesday morning, I was subjected to not one but two fairly earth-shattering pieces of news regarding Ms. Taylor Swift, the first of which was her well-timed sighting with newly single Sophie Turner in New York City on Tuesday night.
Then, this tidbit emerged simultaneously on NFL Twitter and Swiftie Twitter, two ostensibly distinct realms of the website: Swift and the Kansas City Chiefs’ Travis Kelce are dating, Travis’ brother, the Philadelphia Eagles’ Jason Kelce, stated on a local radio station before admitting that he doesn’t know for sure. Hmm!
By Wednesday afternoon, you likely saw a number of headlines similar to “Taylor Swift-Travis Kelce dating rumors are true, Eagles’ star brother says” or heard an audio clip of Jason stating that Swift and Travis are “doing great and… it’s all 100 percent true.” However, you may have missed the part where Jason says, “No, I’m joking; I have no idea what’s happening.” Good enough! I am unaware of my sisters’ dating affairs beyond the fact that one of them is married.

Despite the fact that Jason and Travis are famously brothers who are both very excellent at catching the ball (err, I believe??) and who both played in the Super Bowl last year, they are distinct individuals! Jason cannot be held accountable for whoever his sibling is or is not “quietly hanging out with.”
In conclusion, despite the early morning false positive, we are no closer to determining whether or not the reports of a budding, decidedly “quiet” romance between Travis and Swift are true.

All of this comes after Travis expressed disappointment earlier this summer that he was unable to give Taylor Swift a friendship bracelet with his phone number on it or meet her at the Kansas City Eras tour stop, admitting on the podcast he co-hosts with Jason that he was “furious” but understood that she needed to “save her voice.” (I don’t know, perhaps she just didn’t want to speak to him?) Swift did not owe Travis a meet-and-greet at her workplace, but I can understand his disappointment as he appears to be an enthusiastic Swift fan.
As we remain vigilant for any non-joking confirmation of what is (or isn’t) going on between these two, I’ve devoted some time to learning more about this large, burly, professional football player and avid Taylor Swift fan for your reading delight. Naturally, I began my investigation by questioning football-watching acquaintances, “Who is Travis Kelce???” The information I gained was encouraging: he is skilled at football.
As a “tight end,” he is adept at safeguarding Mr. Patrick Mahomes during offensive plays. (A sign he may also be capable of safeguarding the frequently ambushed Taylor Swift?) And, in a league with stars like Aaron Rodgers and Rodgers’ bromance with Joe Rogan, it’s refreshing to note that Travis has not (yet!) said anything overtly inane. Cool.
I discovered something else about Travis through independent research: Historically, the man has enjoyed tweeting, posting peak-2010 musings such as “These television series are hilarious!! Gotta enjoy the television’s entertainment.” In a since-deleted tweet from 2011, he provides a brief glimpse of his type: “Women with a sense of humor… #plus.” (It has been observed that the man enjoys phonetic spelling.) Travis, like the rest of us during this time period, was down—extremely down—to overshare online: “I keep getting straight dawged on Twitter by #oneofmyfollowers, and she is sexy as hell!!!” He is a passionate man: “The most powerful weapon on earth is a burning soul!” A man’s passion is the key to his achievement!” According to his old tweets, he is also a huge fan of physical humor.
And pertinent to Ms. Swift’s remark, Travis is also a fan of Christmas, particularly holiday music: “There is nothing happier or more optimistic than Christmas music! In 2013, he brazenly proclaimed, “I listen to it year-round, but it becomes more intense during the holidays.”
Travis also enjoys dancing. His appellation has been “T-Rex since I was about 9 years old,” he once revealed with great candor. He does not excel at baseball. And he claims to adore his mother, whom he describes as “an absolute angel” and, in this regard, the model for what he seeks in a romantic partner, which, erm, is fine.
The deeper I dug into these truths, the more the query shifted from “Who is Travis Kelce?” to “What do Travis and Taylor discuss?” (it is unknown if they will speak at all). Perhaps old comments from Travis? Shakespeare, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Charlotte Bront’s works? Or perhaps the works of Pablo Neruda and Sylvia Plath, or any other literary works that have inspired Swift’s renowned lyrics? The game of football? Swift is an Eagles supporter. Favorite holiday songs?
Obviously, “What do Travis and Taylor talk about?” is only pertinent if Swift and Travis are hanging out, which, contrary to Jason’s jokes, has yet to be confirmed.
