The only offers Kirsten Dunst received after starring in the 2021 film “The Power of the Dog” were “sad mom” roles, she said, prompting her to withdraw from acting. The actor discussed his experience of being typecast and ageism in Hollywood in the July cover story of Marie Claire.
Dunst told Marie Claire, “I haven’t worked in two years,” adding, “Every role I was offered was the sad mom.” Dunst was nominated at the 2022 Academy Awards for best performance by an actress in a supporting role for her portrayal of the ranch owner’s wife in “The Power of the Dog.”
Despite occupying her time off with her two sons, whom she and her spouse Jesse Plemons share, Dunst expresses a longing to return to the workforce. “It has been quite difficult for me, to be honest, because I need to eat for myself. Being a mother is the most difficult aspect of not having anything for myself. She stated, “That is every mother, not just me.”
Dunst also addressed ageism in Hollywood and navigating the industry as a woman during the interview, relating an incident on the “Spider-Man” set in which she was degraded. Dunst states that she has “a good head on my shoulders” and is therefore confident that she will age gracefully in the industry, although she feels “insecure like a normal woman.”

“I did ‘Civil War,’ because there aren’t as many good roles for women my age,” the 41-year-old added. In Alex Garland’s next dystopian action movie “Civil War,” Dunst will make a comeback to the big screen. Her role in the film, which is scheduled for release on April 12, is that of a photographer covering a combat zone.
“When I read the script, I thought, ‘I’ve never done anything like this,'” said Dunst. Actors who have opened out about overcoming sexism and ageism in Hollywood are not limited to Dunst.
Maggie Gyllenhaal, who was 37 years old at the time, told The Wrap in 2015 that she was declined for a role because she was “too old to play the lover of a 55-year-old man.”
“I was astounded by the sight. “It initially made me feel bad, then it provoked anger, and finally it induced laughter,” Gyllenhaal explained.

Cameron Diaz told The Mirror in 2016 that she was looking forward to turning 40, but was also cognizant of the implications that would have on her career.
“I was no longer 25 years old; that much was beyond everyone’s comprehension.” “Therefore, I ceased to be valuable,” she explained. Léa Seydoux, a French actress, recently stated to Harper’s Bazaar UK that Hollywood is “harsh on women.”
The aging process is difficult for women. I do not wish to be concerned with losing my contract or failing to be desirable. In America, everything is economic, and freedom is forfeited when it becomes a matter of earning money. It does not sit well with me that you are required to check every box. “In Europe, it is easier to portray a woman on screen,” Seydoux stated.
