Kevin Costner Opens Up After Horizon: An American Saga’s Trailer Release!

Horizon: An American Saga, Kevin Costner’s wildly ambitious, four-part post-Civil War Western epic that helped lure the actor away from his other Western, Yellowstone on Paramount Network, has debuted with its first complete trailer.

Featuring picturesque vistas, gunfights, romance, wagon trains, and a conflict of civilizations between calvary soldiers and indigenous people, the trailer (below) exudes an old-fashioned grandeur. A character portrayed by Danny Huston advises, “No army on earth will be able to stop those wagons from approaching.”

The Horizon series is written, directed, and starred in by Costner. The initial installment will be released in theaters on June 28, and its subsequent installment will be released in just two months. Two additional films have not been filmed as of yet. Costner embarked on a thirty-year journey with the film, financing it in part by taking out a loan against his Santa Barbara home (Costner notes that the first two films filmed in Utah contributed $100 million to the state’s economy).

Costner stated aridly, “When nobody wanted to make the first one, I had the brilliant idea to make four,” in response to a moderated question regarding the Horizon trailer. “Therefore, I am uncertain as to what is incorrect within myself.

However, I desired for it to deviate from the convention of Westerns, in which a town is pre-existing. The origins of [the municipality] remain unknown to all. An individual, if you will, appears from nowhere. Beyond that, all we know about him is that he possesses certain abilities that he wishes to lay to rest, and this town desperately needs those stills… It is all too often a mere expedient for the hero to defeat a fool.

He further stated, “Many of our Western films are subpar due to their oversimplification, but this is not Disneyland.” Such are actual situations. Individuals simply marching along, women striving to ensure that their families are nourished and tidy… That intrigues me.

Although I will eventually have my combat, I am more intrigued by the minor hardships that others had to endure. Therefore, I believed it was worthwhile to retain Horizon because I simply had the urge to convey it. It continued to expand until I abruptly realized that to survive, I would have to rely on my financial resources, which is not the most prudent course of action. However, I have faith that the film will speak louder than my own words.

Diving Into the Trailer of Horizon: An American Saga

The film’s palette is so vibrant in the trailer that it nearly resembles Technicolor, which contrasts with the darker, more gritty aesthetic that Westerns have generally adopted since Clint Eastwood’s 1992 masterpiece Unforgiven. According to Costner, items with a traditional vibe “don’t fall out of [style].” “I believe they can be found in any decade, and as filmmakers, we have the chance to create something enduring. I don’t usually [look at] what’s truly working or follow trends.

In reference to the film’s portrayal of confrontations between Indigenous people and white settlers, Costner remarked, “I want to project what really happened, but I’m ashamed of what happened.” “The fact that there was significant injustice in the West doesn’t lessen the bravery of my forefathers in venturing there. And I realized how courageous and resourceful it took to leave and embark on this march across this nation. All it is is a film depicting the class of civilizations. It is our past. I adore it. If I can perceive myself in a film like this, which I sincerely sought to do, I can watch it with enjoyment.
