Since October 25, 2023, James Michael Johnson, an American jurist and politician, has presided over the United States House of Representatives as the 56th speaker. He is currently serving his fourth term in the House as a Republican representative for the 4th congressional district of Louisiana, a party he actively supports.
Johnson is a graduate of Louisiana State University’s Paul M. Hebert Law Center. Before embarking on a political career, he practiced law privately and for Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF).
During his time at ADF, he espoused the cause of criminalizing homosexuality and sodomy statutes and authored an amicus brief that opposed the ultimate decision of the United States Supreme Court in Lawrence v. Texas (2003). Between 2004 and 2012, Johnson, a proponent of young-earth creationism, served on the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention.

The eldest of Jeanne Johnson and James Patrick “Pat” Johnson’s four children, Johnson was born in Shreveport, Louisiana (who passed away in 2016). He has stated that his parents were teenagers when they became pregnant and that he is the result of an unintended conception. Afterward, they got divorced.
In a fire at a cold storage facility in 1984, Pat Johnson suffered severe injuries and became paralyzed while working for the Shreveport Fire Department. That fire claimed the life of Captain Percy R. Johnson, a fellow firefighter. The younger Johnson’s parents prohibited him from becoming a firefighter, even though he wanted to carry on his father’s legacy.

Johnson is a Shreveport native and alum of Captain Shreve High School. He became a first-generation college graduate in 1995 when he graduated from Louisiana State University with a Bachelor of Science in business administration. Perhaps most notably recognized for his defense of former President Donald Trump’s endeavors to nullify the outcomes of the 2020 election, Johnson is a conservative.
He signed an amicus brief in a case that sought to overturn Pennsylvania’s election results as a former constitutional attorney, in which he urged Trump to “continue fighting.” In 2022, he introduced a bill that would have prohibited schools from promoting or discussing gender identity in opposition to same-sex marriage. He is an opponent of abortion rights and referred to the repeal of federal protections for abortions as a “joyous and magnificent occasion.”
Opposite to Ukraine Aid
Republican for Ukraine, an advocacy organization that issues report cards to lawmakers regarding their support, has graded Johnson’s opposition to Ukraine obtaining defense assistance from Russia an F.
Experience in Leadership Positions
Johnson, who was elected vice-head of the conference and served as chair of the conservative Republican Study Committee, has no leadership experience in general. This could prove to be a disadvantage as he engages in negotiations with the Democratic-controlled Senate and the White House.

The fifth child in the Johnson family is Michael Tirrell James, an adult son. When James was perhaps 14 or 16, Johnson met him at a Young Life Ministries event, brought him in, and became his legal guardian.[incoherent] Johnson stated in 2019 that the incident occurred in 1997 and that “we took custody of Michael and made him part of our family 22 years ago when we were just newlyweds and Michael was just 14 and was out on the streets.” Johnson stated in 2020 “We took Michael in almost 20 years ago; he was 14.”
