‘Baywatch’ Reboot Makes A Splash At Fox: Sun, Sand, And Surprises

Variety reports that Fox in the US will premiere the revival of the beloved beach series Baywatch in the fall of 2024. Fox Entertainment and Fremantle are co-producing the reboot. For the upcoming show, Lara Olsen will be the executive producer and showrunner. Olsen has previously been in Spinning Out and 90210.

The ‘Baywatch’ reboot has received a significant commitment from Fox and IMDb. With a substantial script plus a penalty commitment to Baywatch, a revival of the beloved beach series, Fox is stepping up its lifeguard drama game. Fox Entertainment and Fremantle are co-producing the latest version.

Baywatch

In April of last year, Deadline made it known exclusively that Fremantle was developing a remake of Baywatch. At that time, Fox was developing another lifeguard drama franchise from John Wells Prods called Rescue: HI-Surf and had already begun talks with the independent studio for the possible series. The latter, a co-production of Fox Entertainment and Warner Bros. TV, was later renewed for the 2023–24 season; however, because of delays caused by the strikes, it is currently scheduled to premiere in the fall of 2024.

Lara Olsen has penned the new “action-packed” Baywatch revival and will also function as showrunner. It has fearless ocean rescues, immaculate beaches, and the recognizable red bathing uniform, as well as a whole new generation of Baywatch lifeguards navigating complex, chaotic personal lives. Olsen co-executives alongside Doug Schwartz, Greg Bonann, and Michael Berk, the creators of Baywatch.

The original series portrayed a group of lifeguards who patrolled the beaches of LA County, and it produced international stars out of people like David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson. The show, which Gannett created for NBC, debuted in the fall of 1989 but the network canceled it after just one season.
