25-year-old American Air Force veteran Aaron Bushnell, who was born in 1998, self-immolated outside the Israeli Embassy in Washington, DC, to express his opposition to the conflict in Gaza.

In May 2020, Bushnell enlisted in the United States Air Force (USAF) and successfully finished his Basic and Technical Training. After that, he took a job as a USAF DevOps engineer in San Antonio, juggling his obligations with a Southern New Hampshire University CompTIA Security+ certification and an undergraduate degree in computer software engineering.

Being the “kindest, gentlest, silliest little kid,” according to his peers, he was dedicated to bringing about “liberation for all with a smile on his face.”

The Mental Health of Aaron Bushnell Ultimately Resulted in His Demise

The occurrence of the self-immolation of Aaron Bushnell on February 25, 2024, in the vicinity of the Embassy of Israel in Washington, D.C., caused widespread apprehension across the country. Around 12:58 p.m. local time, he approached the Israeli Embassy in Washington, D.C., with the explicit intention of self-immolating as an extreme act of protest against the Israel–Hamas conflict.

Before this unfortunate occurrence, he had drafted a will containing precise provisions, one of which stipulated that a neighbor be responsible for the care of his cat following his demise. He continued to wear his service uniform during the entire encounter.

He positioned himself in front of the embassy gates and set up his camera outside before going live on his Twitch channel, “LillyAnarKitty.” After his body caught fire, he was taken in severe condition to a local hospital. Bushnell’s death was confirmed by the Washington, D.C. police that same day. According to the report, Bushnell passed away on Sunday at 10:06 p.m., with burn injuries being listed as the cause of death.
