Yulia Borisovna Navalnaya is an economist, public figure, and widow of Alexei Navalny, the head of the Russian opposition. Media outlets have referred to her as the “first lady” of the Russian opposition. She announced her intention to resume her late husband’s career.
Subsequent to her parent’s divorce when Navalnaya was in the fifth grade, her mother entered into matrimony with an employee of the USSR State Planning Committee. Her mother’s former employer was the Ministry of Light Industry. Following her graduation from the Faculty of International Economic Relations at the Plekhanov Russian Economic Academy, Navalnaya completed a graduate-level program and an internship abroad.

While on vacation in Turkey in 1998, the pair got to know one another and married two years later. Navalny was not a prominent opposition politician or known figure in Russian politics at the time.
Despite being a member of the liberal party Yabloko, Navalnaya stayed out of the spotlight as her spouse gained popularity. She would go on public appearances with Navalny, who never spoke out but frequently talked about his family on social media and in public.
Some close to the couple regarded their relationship as profound and nearly psychic. The couple’s love to each other contrasted with Putin’s divorce from his wife of 30 years.

On Monday, as many Russians were still in shock at Alexei Navalny’s passing, they were given some encouraging news. Yulia Navalnaya, the spouse of the opposition politician, announced on Monday that she will continue her husband’s goal to overthrow Vladimir Putin’s government, three days after the Russian authorities announced the politician’s death in a prison situated north of the Arctic Circle.

Recent meetings with European Union members in Belgium place Navalnaya outside of Russia and beyond the reach of Putin and the Kremlin. Upon her return to Russia, she would likely be arrested, just as her spouse did.
