TMZ reports that Jay Leno, 73, has petitioned for conservatorship over his 77-year-old wife, Mavis Leno, following the unfortunate diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. A conservator is “founded on the diagnosis,” according to an insider who spoke to the outlet. The precise date of her diagnosis is unknown; however, it has been reported that a hearing regarding the conservatorship petition will take place on April 9, 2024.
In November 2023, prior to the announcement of the conservatorship, Jay and Mavis were spotted together in public. The romantic couple attended a comedy show in Los Angeles, California. Jay, who was hospitalized on November 13, 2022, for burns sustained in an accident while working on his classic vehicles, has not yet commented publicly on the conservatorship petition or Mavis’ disease.
Illness and Health Update of Jay Leno’s Wife
Mavis Leno, Jay Leno’s wife, has regrettably been diagnosed with dementia, according to court records obtained by numerous news sources. Jay Leno has filed for conservatorship of Mavis’ estate because she is unable to complete an estate plan due to her illness. According to the court filing, Mavis, who is 77 years old, has gradually lost capacity and orientation to space and time over the last several years.
Mavis First Encountered Jay Early in Her Career
Before Jay became the host of The Tonight Show, the two met Mavis even as guests, and the two struck it off immediately. She recalled meeting him for the first time at the renowned Los Angeles Comedy Store in January 1976, according to an interview with The Los Angeles Times from 2014.

She stated that while seated in the front row, she was inspired to write her comedy when she noticed Jay and thought he was “beautiful.”
She stated that they had just met. “I needed to use the ladies’ restroom immediately following his performance on the evening we met.”

What I was unaware of at the time was that that area of the Comedy Store was the only gathering spot for comedians. “Therefore, upon my return from the restroom, he inquired, ‘Are you that girl in front of you?'” she explained, adding that the remark “gradually evolved.”
The Couple Wed in 1980
Mavis stated that because she could get on Jay’s insurance policy, which he confessed was “not the most romantic,” they decided to wed even though she had never intended to do so. Clearly, this decision was a good one, as they have been married ever since. The union has evidently been fruitful, as the comedian has frequently raved over his wife.
Jay discussed the advice he provides others regarding marriage in a 2019 interview with People. “Upon meeting a woman, I always advise men to wed according to their conscience. “Fiery spouse should be the type of person you aspire to be like,” he advised.
