The Scream series is in danger of dying.
One day after Spyglass sacked Melissa Barrera, the star of the most recent Scream movie, Scream VII, it has been reported that Jenna Ortega will not be returning. The future of the aging series is now uncertain due to the loss of its two key characters, who were crucial in bringing it back to life. For the time being, Christopher Landon is still serving as Spyglass’s director, but it’s unknown what comes next.
With her Wednesday season 2 shooting schedule, Wednesday Adams star Jenna Ortega has withdrawn from Scream 7. Following Melissa Barrera’s termination from the horror movie over her social media tweets against Israel and Palestine, word of her departure has leaked out. However, Jenna Ortega’s exit, which was planned months before the SAG-AFTRA strike started, was not affected by Barrera’s dismissal.
Why Did Jenna Ortega Drops Out Of “Scream VII”?
Barrera’s firing, which happened after she made many references to the Israel-Hamas conflict on social media, is unrelated, according to sources close to Ortega. According to sources, Ortega’s representatives told Spyglass that the actress—who is among the most well-known young performers to have emerged in Hollywood in the last ten years—would not be coming back before the actors went on strike.
According to a number of reports, the actress either had no deal at all or asked the film studio what they thought was too much money while they were renegotiating her option. Spyglass had previously turned down Neve Campbell, the original star of the franchise because she demanded a large pay increase for Scream VI.
The Spyglass statement following Barrera’s removal from Scream VII read, “Spyglass’ stance is unequivocally clear: We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion, or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech.”
2022 Revival Of “Scream”
In the 2022 revival of “Scream” and the current sequel “Scream VI,” Ortega and Barrera portrayed sisters Tara and Sam Carpenter, respectively. Along with fresh and returning stars, they revitalized the long-dormant horror franchise. Director Christopher Landon’s “Scream 7” was announced earlier this year.
With the cast of Scream (2022), which reunited veteran actors David Arquette, Courteney Cox, and Campbell with rising talents Barrera and Ortega, the series was revitalized. Globally, it brought in $137.7 million. Scream VI, which was filmed in New York, grossed over $168.9 million worldwide.
