Another Call of Duty, another year. With Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’s scheduled release date of 2023, the first-person shooter genre has been continuing strong for nearly 20 years.
Activision knows that first-person shooters don’t get any bigger than this, which is why they’ve brought back fan-favorite antagonist Vladimir Makarov. Naturally, a number of well-known characters from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will appear to aid in eliminating the terrorists, including Simon “Ghost” Riley, Sergeant John “Soap” MacTavish, and Captain John Price. Let’s go back to 2011.
Modern Warfare 3, created by Sledgehammer Games, is a direct continuation of Modern Warfare 2, released in 2022. Modern Warfare 2 was a revival of the Modern Ware sub-series, which ran from 2007 to 2011. Though a little unclear at times, it’s basically a fresh narrative featuring the same characters that ignores the events of the first three Modern Warfare games.
In light of everything mentioned above, this is all we currently know about the release date, pre-orders, and news for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3—including the revelation that zombie mode will be returning!

Who Is Developing Modern Warfare 3?
Modern Warfare 3 is being developed by Sledgehammer Games, providing Treyarch with the full three years they anticipated to release the 2024 COD game. For Sledgehammer, who also created Call of Duty: Vanguard in 2021, this implies a mere two-year lag.
If this is accurate, it’s unknown why SHG was chosen to spearhead the game’s development; however, just like with previous Call of Duty games, they will have backing from all other Activision studios, including Treyarch and Infinity Ward.
What Will Happen to Warzone?
As of yet, there’s been no formal confirmation regarding Warzone’s exact fate upon the release of Modern Warfare 3. It has been announced that there will be a brand-new Warzone map. Rumors have it that the Battle Royale map, which is expected to debut at the beginning of Season 1 in December 2023, will be based in Las Almas, the site of the Modern Warfare 2 campaign.
On October 5, the new Warzone will make its debut at COD Next, where developers and pros will demonstrate how it functions.
