Kevin Costner as John Dutton
The grandfather John Dutton is portrayed by Kevin Costner. He is a businessman and rancher who is fighting to cling to the Dutton land and prevent his family from disintegrating. When he awakens from his months-long coma following his attempted murder in the season 3 finale, not much has changed. He chooses to challenge the incumbent governor for governor in an effort to keep Jamie from gaining too much power.
Kelly Reilly as Beth
After narrowly escaping the mail bomb that destroyed her workplace and maybe her assistant, Beth sat by her father’s bedside for the majority of her recovery period, planning her retaliation against those who intended to hurt her and her family.
Beth always acts in Rip’s or her father’s best interests. She accepted a position with Market Equities in season 4 with the intention of dismantling them within. To the dismay of her father, she successfully manipulates social activist Summer (Piper Perabo) into following her orders, landing her in jail in the process.
Luke Grimes as Kayce
After escaping the attack at his Livestock Commissioner’s office in the first episode of season 4, Kayce is shot during the subsequent car chase and gunfight. A few members of the hired militia get into the Dutton home with the intention of hurting his wife and child while Kayce is away following the bad people.
Tate chooses to get Monica and himself off the ranch and into a house of their own when they both have post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a result. At the conclusion of season 4, he embarks on a vision quest, and the future he sees doesn’t appear to be a happy one. Upon Monica’s inquiry, he replies, “The end of us.”
Wes Bentley as Jamie
Jamie is being treated like a puppet with strings tugged in all directions. Previously, it was John Dutton tugging his strings; now, it’s Will Patton’s Garrett Randall, and occasionally, Beth or his baby mama Christina.
Jamie, John Dutton’s adoptive son, is overjoyed to hear that his father is running for governor. He is also eager to be tricked further, but Garrett and Christina persuade him that there is still hope.
Cole Hauser as Rip Wheeler
Rip may not speak much, but when he does, it’s always a sobering reality or something lovely. He’s one of the few individuals who doesn’t feel fear from Beth. He looks amused by her more than anything else, actually. When Beth brings little orphan Carter home, he isn’t too happy about it at first, but by the end of the season, he starts to grow fond of him.
Brecken Merrill (Tate Dutton) and Kelsey Asbille (Monica Dutton)
In the opening scene of the fourth season, Tate uses a shotgun to kill an intruder who is going to kill Monica. Tate is still dealing with the aftermath of his kidnapping, and the events of the day have left both of them traumatized, remaining on the ranch doesn’t seem to be helping. Tate is doing well, and the two appear to be very happy as they leave the property. Kayce departs on his vision quest just before Monica declares her pregnancy.
Gil Birmingham as Thomas Rainwater
The head of the Broken Rock Indian Reservation was largely absent throughout season 4. Even while his attempts to reclaim the Dutton land for his people appear to be on hold for the time being, they will inevitably come up again.
